Dr. John F. Maher was a pioneering American nephrologist best known for his groundbreaking work in peritoneal dialysis and as the founding president of the ISPD. Serving from 1982 until his passing (1992), he helped establish the ISPD as a leading global organization advancing dialysis research and practice. As a professor and director of the Renal Clinic at Georgetown University, Dr. Maher made major clinical and academic contributions, authoring influential works such as Replacement of Renal Function by Dialysis. His legacy lives on through the annual John F. Maher Award, which honours excellence in peritoneal dialysis research and innovation.
