G. La Greca (Italy)

Dr. Giuseppe La Greca was an Italian nephrologist whose pioneering leadership helped establish PD as a mainstream renal replacement therapy in Italy and beyond. As head of nephrology at San Bortolo Hospital in Vicenza, he developed one of the country’s first comprehensive CAPD programs and coordinated early Italian multicentre studies that demonstrated PD’s clinical viability. In 1982, he founded the Vicenza International Course on Peritoneal Dialysis, which became a renowned global forum for PD education, collaboration, and innovation. Through his extensive clinical research, editorial work, and mentorship—often in collaboration with colleagues such as Claudio Ronco—La Greca advanced understanding of PD physiology, ultrafiltration, infection management, and solution biocompatibility. His enduring legacy lies in shaping PD practice, training generations of nephrologists, and fostering an international community committed to improving dialysis care.
