Dimitrios G. Oreopoulos (Canada)

Dr. Dimitrios G. Oreopoulos was a Greek-Canadian nephrologist whose pioneering work transformed peritoneal dialysis (PD) into a practical, patient-centred therapy. After completing his MD in Athens and a PhD in Northern Ireland, he moved to Canada in 1969, joining the University of Toronto and Toronto Western Hospital, where he introduced Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) in 1977. Oreopoulos innovated practical PD technologies, including plastic bag systems and improved catheters, which reduced infection risk and made home dialysis feasible. A prolific researcher and educator, he published over 500 articles, founded Peritoneal Dialysis International, trained dozens of international nephrologists, and served as ISPD president. He emphasized patient empowerment, humane care, and medical ethics, leaving a legacy of safer, more accessible PD, global CAPD adoption, and a generation of clinicians and researchers shaped by his mentorship.
