It depends on why the catheter is being flushed. If the flushing is occurring shortly after the placement of PD catheter prior to the start of training, using peritoneal dialysate without heparin is most appropriate. you may choose to add heparin if there is visible fibrin. Of course, if you put fluid in and the patient is not undergoing PD, it is important to drain it out as well – leaving fluid in will lead to fluid getting reabsorbed and add to systemic volume overload.
