My name is Petra Janasova- I work as a station nurse in the Department of Pediatric Nephrology at the Motol University Hospital at the 2nd Medical Faculty of Charles University in Prague. In the care of our doctors and nurses, patients are also dependent on peritoneal dialysis. I have been trying for some time to find out if someone has ever developed a standard of care for a peritoneal catheter – I am interested in the procedure of catheter dressing, care for it since its introduction to the patient. In the Czech Republic, a similar standard of nursing care (guideline) does not yet exist. The information I found on the internet is very strict. Can I ask you for information about peritoneal catheter care as you practice it in your medical facility? Thank you very much. Mgr. Petra Janasova

There are many protocols out there. Here is a couple I have found:

  1. https://ispd.org/media/pdf/Shower.pdf
  2. The NKF website link that discusses this topic: https://www.kidney.org/atoz/content/taking-care-your-peritoneal-dialysis-pd-catheter

We thank you for your question. If your question is specifically about PD catheter exit-site care for a child on PD, here are two resources that might be helpful for you:
1. British Columbia (BC) Provincial Renal Agency. Peritoneal Dialysis. Pediatric. Available at:
http://www.bcrenal.ca/health-professionals/clinical-resources/peritoneal-dialysis#Pediatric–Dialysis
(To access: Click on “Peritoneal Dialysis Policy and Procedure”, then click on “Exit-site Care”)

2. ISPD Guidelines/recommendations. Consensus guidelines for the prevention and treatment of catheter-related infections and peritonitis in pediatric patients receiving peritoneal dialysis. 2012 update. Available at: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.3747/pdi.2011.00091
(Go to Guideline 3 – Early exit-site care, and Guideline 4 – Chronic exit-site care.)
