Is there any published data/guidelines on the management of PD catheter in patients undergoing surgery for intestinal obstruction? I have a 65-yo patient who has been on APD for 6 months and has now developed intestinal obstruction due to incarcerated umbilical hernia.

Surgery is urgently needed. If there is  a peritonitis, peritoneal catheter would be removed simultaneously. Otherwise the catheter may be filled with PD solution + sodium heparine until peritoneal dialysis could be restarted

In the peri-operative and post-operative period, PD would have to be stopped and the patient transferred to HD. PD can be resumed after 6-8 weeks once there is complete healing.
