We thank you for your question. We are not aware of specific ISPD guidelines outlining when the PD patient should have the PD fluid drained from the abdomen or be “empty” before going for a specific test or procedure. However, the guidelines on this topic from the website of the British Columbia Renal Agency (BCRA) should provide useful guidance (1). We would add, when the patient is having a PD catheter removed or abdominal surgery such as hernia repair, the patient should also be drained of PD fluid prior to the procedure.
