This is a routine procedure in order to detect leaks or adhesions in the peritoneal cavity (using iodinated non-ionic low-osmolar contrast agents). Of course, it has to be considered that contrast agent is absorbed from the peritoneal cavity into the systemic circulation (however, until now none of the published studies has described a significant influence on residual renal function). Furthermore, allergic reactions can theoretically occur (but not more frequent than after intravenous application of contrast media).
