I have a pt that has elevated RBC's in hid PD effluent. WBC and Polymorphs are all WNL. Pt has had heart transplant 5 years ago and tested positive for Hepatitis C. My concern is the elevated RBC"s. Please advise. Thanks.

If the peritoneal effluent has Red Blood Cell it would be necessary to find out its cause, so you may need to study peritoneal effluent citology, bacterial cultures, TBC, and abominal-pelvis images, CTscan, or NMR (without Gadollinium), in order to rule out, for instance, hepatocarcinoma (in a VCH patient) or other malignancy.
