I am a nurse have been working in Dialysis for 10+ years. Is it appropriate to remove sutures for a PD exit site. I have orders from my nephrologist and orders and prn orders. Is this something a PD nurse very skilled is able to do?

We thank you for your question. The ISPD is an international organization; therefore, unfortunately, we don’t feel it is appropriate for us to comment on a local practice issue. While suture removal is a fairly common nursing practice in some countries, once a nurse is deemed competent; it is not within the scope of practice for nurses in other countries. We would urge to consult your local facility; they may have a clear policy to give you guidance. A local state or provincial nephrology nursing organization may also have practice recommendations on this issue of suture removal.
