There are several considerations. If a patient has a bowel resection and colostomy (which involves a breach of the peritoneal membrane), they would require a period of HD (eg. 4-6 weeks) to allow the peritoneum to heal before resuming PD. Ideally, the colostomy site would be on the opposite side of the abdomen from the PD catheter exit site. Care must be taken to ensure that the PD catheter exit site remains clean. If the exit site is in close proximity to the colostomy, consideration could be given to re-siting the exit site to a pre-sternal location.
