Good Morning, I am looking of standard of care information regarding the dispensing of peritoneal dialysis fluid in the hospital setting. Is it treated like medication and dispensed from the pharmacy or is it supplied through supply chain? Thank you in advance for any information you are able to provide me.

We thank you for your question. We had a similar question posted to the ISPD website in February 2021. Here is a link to our responses at that time:

In both Canada and the United States, while PD solutions are considered a medication, as far as we understand, in a hospital setting, PD solutions are not dispensed from the pharmacy.

One point we would like to make though is, for this patient on PD in the hospital or about to be discharged home, if medications are ordered to be added IP to the PD fluid, in some hospitals a pharmacist may be required to do that. You would need to follow the policy of the hospital.

Generally speaking, we would suggest contacting the clinical consultant for the company that supplies your PD solutions − that person may well have more specific information for you.
