Questions About PD

In our organization, PD fluid on the inpatient side is not dispensed by pharmacy, and instead is stocked in our supply storage. I believe the nursing staff do have to account for the fluid used by scanning it from our order sets and therefore each exchange requires a separate order (exchange #1 vs. #2, #3 etc. as opposed to having a simplified order that would state to perform 4 exchanges of 2 L volume using 2.5 % dextrose solution).

We thank you for your question. While in Canada and the United States PD solution is considered a medication, we are not aware of the practice of nurses in a hospital needing to verify the correct PD solution through barcoding. However, we would suggest contacting the clinical consultant for the company that supplies your PD solutions − that person may well have more information for you.
