Questions About PD
It is important to test the patency of the peritoneal dialysis catheter after it has been placed and it is best done in the operating room. This patency test can be done either with saline or peritoneal dialysis fluid (with or without heparin). There is no need to periodically flush the PD catheter, however. The external limbs of peritoneal dialysis catheters are, not infrequently, buried in the subcutaneous tissue now with no possibility of being flushed and the overwhelming majority of these catheters function well on exteriorization.
However, in our unit, we do periodically flush the catheter and use this an opportunity to educated patients about how to take care of the PD catheter and the exit site.
