It would depend on severity of the medical condition of your patient as well as local practice. For a serious complication such as peritonitis, you will want your patient to present to emergency department or the PD unit. For relatively minor issues like fluid balance, choice of PD solution, alarms, etc. a telephone call is appropriate. I think it will be difficult to set up fixed criteria for this. In general, depending on the severity of the clinical problem, patients’ ability to follow instructions, availability of clinical resources, you need to make decisions on individual basis.
