I tape a minicap on the injection port while draining the patient. Clamp the drain and fill lines; disconnect. Then, place a blue clamp on the y-connector, make sure the broken light blue frangible is in the circular part of the clamp and the remainder of the y-segment is occluded. Now, hang the drain bag on an IV pole with the fill bag on a pad on the floor. Open the drain and fill lines. The fluid you wish to culture will flow into the fill bag. Because the y-segment is occluded, there is no cross contamination. The minicap on the injection port sterilizes it for drawing cultures.

Alternatively, you can do the same procedure before disconnecting the Ultra Bag from the patient. Make sure the transfer set is closed before hanging the drain bag to prevent fluid from re-entering the patient’s abdomen. You could draw the culture either before or after disconnecting the patient.

I hope this helps.
