Dr. Shen is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at UCLA and a practicing nephrologist at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, a safety-net hospital in Los Angeles, California, USA. She received her MD from Columbia University, did her internal medicine training at UCLA, and completed her nephrology fellowship and earned a Master’s degree in Epidemiology from Stanford University.
Dr. Shen’s research focuses on assessing and improving the outcomes on peritoneal dialysis, with a particular emphasis on health disparities. Her expertise is in analyzing large databases. She has also been active in promoting patient-centered care through qualitative research. She has received funding from the NIH for her research.
Specific to her work in the field of peritoneal dialysis, Dr. Shen was a member-at-large of the North American Council of the ISPD from 2017-2022 and is currently on the ISPD Membership Committee. She is involved in patient-centered outcomes as a member of the Standardized Outcomes in Nephrology –Peritoneal Dialysis Initiative, which aims to define a core set of outcomes to be reported in clinical trials that are relevant to patients and caregivers. Dr. Shen is also involved in the Peritoneal Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (PDOPPS) as a member of the steering committee and as the co-chair of the US advisory panel.
