Our chapter exists to support the growth and sustainability of PD in Africa through education, training, research, and advocacy. We believe PD is a vital, patient-centred therapy that can expand access to kidney replacement therapy and strengthen health systems across diverse African settings.

We are a collaborative, pan-African community of clinicians, educators, researchers, and partners committed to advancing peritoneal dialysis (PD) across the continent—for both acute kidney injury (AKI) and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD).

We work closely with the African Association of Nephrology (AFRAN) PD Committee, aligning regional expertise with global standards [see below]. Through this partnership, we deliver bilingual (English and French) educational activities and hands-on training, often in collaboration with Saving Young Lives, to build local capacity and support frontline teams.

Growing Local Solutions 🫘
Encouragingly, local production is emerging. Atlantic Pharmaceuticals (Ghana) commenced local PD solution manufacturing in 2025, and Biomedical Pharmaceutical Company (Nigeria) has previously produced PD solutions. These developments are important steps toward affordability, reliability, and long-term sustainability.
Addressing Shared Challenges – Together 🌍
We acknowledge ongoing challenges such as the cost and availability of PD fluids and catheters, and the difficulty some programmes face in sourcing supplies at scale. Our chapter serves as a platform for shared problem-solving, advocacy, and coordination—working with partners to improve access, explore cost-effective options, and support countries ready to expand PD services.

In partnership with ISPD and regional and global allies, including the International Society of Nephrology and the International Pediatric Nephrology Association, we aim to strengthen training pathways, engage industry constructively, and support the development of regional PD solution production where needed.

Read More →Over the past three years, the African Association of Nephrology (AFRAN) and the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) have joined forces to build a strategic and impactful partnership. Together, we’re advancing peritoneal dialysis (PD) across Africa — focusing on education, training, capacity building, and sustainable access to quality renal care.
In May 2024, AFRAN and ISPD formally signed their first Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) — laying the foundation for long-term cooperation and reaffirming our shared commitment to strengthen PD across the continent.
AFRAN hosted its first dedicated session at the ISPD 2024 Congress in Dubai, giving African leaders a central voice on the global PD stage — while ISPD reciprocated by presenting at the AFRAN 2025 Congress in Tunisia, highlighting PD within the African nephrology community.
A flagship collaboration between AFRAN, ISPD, SFNDT (Société Francophone de Néphrologie, Dialyse et Transplantation), and SOSENDT (Société Sénégalaise de Néphrologie, Dialyse et Transplantation). Designed to expand PD education and training in Francophone Africa, the project has delivered:

🧠 Structured training courses;
🔧 Hands-on workshops;
👥 216 clinicians trained at the Second PD Catheter Insertion Workshop in Senegal — with cross-country participation supported by ISPD sponsorship.
