Dear Friends,

Preparations are now well under way for the societies’ congress to be held in Kuala Lumpa later this year. I am very grateful to all those who have been contributing to make this happen – but especially to those who have agreed to speak and of course the wonderful local organising committee. We have an exciting programme ranging from the practicalities of PD catheter insertion to the biology of the peritoneal membrane and from the challenges we face in developing high quality PD programmes to the latest update on clinical trials in PD. We are also keen to hear about your own contributions to the therapy. The deadline for ABSTRACT submission is 16th March so please take time to visit the meeting website and prepare your submission!

One of the reasons for coming to KL will be to hear about the progress we are making in achieving a Peritoneal Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study – PDOPPS. I believe that this initiative – which is run by Arbor Research (Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA) and now has sufficient funding to become a reality – will have a major impact on the improvement of quality in care and clinical outcomes for patients treated with PD. Initiation of the project has been made possible though a substantial research grant form Baxter Healthcare. Along with Arbor Research, ISPD will play a key role in the design and implementation of this study to ensure that it has truly global significance. This will include agreed clear definitions of the important clinical endpoints and the identification of key practice patterns that are likely to influence these.

Time to make your travel plans!

With Best wishes,
Simon Davies, ISPD present
