| Simon is currently the Clinical Director of the Renal Unit at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire and Professor of Nephrology and Dialysis Medicine at the Institute of Science and Technology in Medicine, Keele University, UK. He runs a PD programme for about 100 patients and combines this with an active clinical research programme. His research has focused on the physiology and pathophysiology of peritoneal membrane function, especially in long-term dialysis, measurement of body composition and fluid status, and how this may be abnormal but improved on PD patients. He takes an active interest in teaching PD, being a founder member of the UK PD Academy and is Associate Editor (Clinical Studies) for Peritoneal Dialysis International. | Mandate The International Studies Committee exists to encourage high quality, international research collaborations. Many problems in PD can only be answered effectively by such collaborative ventures, especially when large numbers of patients are required. The committee, which comprises a clinical research representative from each continent, undertakes to conduct peer review of research proposals, and subsequently endorsement by the society where appropriate. Studies currently endorsed are IDEAL, the GLOBAL Fluid Study and the International Paediatric Peritonitis Registry. Small grants ($5-10,000) have been awarded at the discretion of Council to help enable these projects, in the context of additional funding obtained by the researchers. Those wishing to approach the committee with a research proposal are encouraged to discuss this informally first with the chair, email:
