Martin Wilkie is a consultant nephrologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, UK. He has been involved in peritoneal dialysis for 25 years and believes passionately that patients should be given the opportunity to take control of their own treatment where possible. Over several years he has taught at peritoneal dialysis academies and been involved in a range of PD related research projects including most recently the development of a decision aid for patients facing dialysis. In the Yorkshire and the Humber region, UK, he has lead a programme to initiate Shared Haemodialysis Care, where in centre patients are supported to perform dialysis related tasks.
He chairs the Yorkshire and Humber renal specialty research group and is the NIHR renal specialty group patient partnership involvement (PPI) lead. He has chaired the standards and guidelines committee of the International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD), led the development of the 2010 guideline for peritoneal access and supported the translation of guidelines into Chinese and French. Until recently he chaired the UK Renal Registry dialysis study group and has initiated a UK multi-site audit of peritoneal dialysis access. After being an associate editor for Peritoneal Dialysis International for 5 years he has recently taken over as Editor in Chief and is very excited about the opportunities this position offers to work with the PD community to extend the reach and impact of the modality across the world. Martin Wilkie qualified in medicine from Manchester (UK) 1984, and completed his MD thesis in 1994.
