Teaching Nurses to Teach: Peritoneal Dialysis Training

How do I know my patients have learned?
Patients often know when they are ready to perform peritoneal dialysis on their own. You will be able to recognize this readiness as your patients’ skills become more automatic, and the patients no longer need reminders or guidance.

Remember that our training began with two goals in mind:

If you have developed similar goals, broken down the tasks and information to meet those goals and provided support along the way, your patients should increasingly be able to safely demonstrate the goals that you have identified.

The recognition of contamination and taking appropriate action can be evaluated through verbal questioning, demonstration and/or a written quiz. Here is an example of a quiz prepared by the nurses at Dialysis Clinic Incorporated in Pittsburgh. If the patient does not correctly answer all the questions on the quiz, it is important for you to discuss the question(s) missed with the patient in order to clear up any misunderstanding. Assure the patient that getting a answer incorrect does not mean that he or she has failed. Rather, you have discovered an area that still needs to be learned.

What kind of follow-up is needed?
Although patients go home with the ability to follow the procedures exactly as they have been taught, sometimes patients develop careless habits or become complacent about the need minimize infection. Patients must be periodically re-evaluated and retrained when necessary.

Our overall goal is to not only teach patients peritoneal dialysis, but to do so in a way that helps patients avoid infection and other complications. We believe that the sequential presentation of information that follows the principles of adult learning can certainly help patients reach those goals.
